Boone Douthiitt vs L. R. Riley (Baptist)
July 17, 1930
Pottsville, Kentucky

(By Cecil B. Douthitt)

July 1-4 at Pottsville, Kentucky.

This Church of Christ is the strongest country congregation in Graves County. The Baptist once had a very thriving church here, but several years ago N. B. Hardeman defeated H. B. Taylor in debate. Since then the Baptists have constantly lost ground. Mr. Riley hoped to restore the church by debating Douthitt.

Upon Riley's request, each debater agreed to answer all questions. Riley presented 77 which Douthitt answered. The moderator for Riley, Mr. Dennington, said he had. Then B. L. Douthitt asked these few questions on the subject of depravity: "Does the infant have a spirit? "Did the infant Jesus have a spirit?" (Luke 1:80) "Do unconverted men have spirits?" (Genesis 41:8; Danial 2:1) Mr. Dennington said: "I'll see that he answers them"

During Riley's next speech, Mr. Dennington arose and asked Riley to answer the questions. Mr. Riley became angry: "T. W. Dennington, or anybody else, cannot make me answer questions." Douthitt then rose and said he would drop the matter and let Dennington and Riley fight it out. Mr. Dennington did what he could to persuade Riley to answer. He finally answered the last two. "Infants do not have spirits." This put Baptist doctrine in a very bad light before a large audience.

Boone Douthitt is only 31 years old, but has had 23 public debates. He is a pleasing speaker and never shows the least anger at his opponent. The brethren were well pleased.
