C. B. Douthitt vs H. Etter (Baptist)
February 27, 1930
Metropolis, Illinois

(By L. E. Jones)

Metropolis, Illinois, February 4-7.

Mr. Etter affirmed the first two nights that "salvation is by faith before baptism;" Bro. Douthitt affirmed last two nights "that salvation is by faith and other acts of obedience."

This was a high-toned discussion, one of the cleanest I ever attended. Large crowds and best of attention prevailed. Brethren came from Christopher, Dongola, Rasiclaire, Vienna, Brookport in Illinois. Brethren Harper and Westmoreland came from Jackson, Tennessee.

Mr. Etter is an average Baptist debater. He said the "chief rulers" in John 12:42 were saved; that a "disciple" was a Christian. He said that Christ spoke of things as they appeared to be; that Judas appeared to be a disciple, but was not.

Bro. Douthitt towered above him like the giant oak above the scrub of the forest. He captured the crowd and held them throughout the discussion. Several have said that Bro. Douthitt's opening speech on his proposition was as fine a speech as they had ever heard. One man told me it was a "masterpiece."

Prospects are that we shall have other discussions in the near future. If the brethren anywhere want a man to defend the truth in a high-toned, dignified way, do not hesitate to call Cecil B. Douthitt.

T. F. Lowery, West Frankfort, Illinois moderated for Etter; L. E. Jones moderated for C. B. Douthitt.
