G. A. Dunn vs W. C. Davis (Primitive Baptist)
April 21, 1938
Parrish, Alabama

(By Gus Nichols, Jasper, Alabama)

November 15-18 at Parrish, Alabama.

Mr. Davis called down in almost every speech for violating rules. But Bro. Dunn followed him and defended truth with becoming grace and refinement, yet with great power and force. Discussion centered around the plan of salvation.

Cecil Davis affirmed: "the scriptures teach that God gives eternal life to dead alien sinners without any condition on their part." Bro. Dunn affirmed "that salvation is conditional." He showed that eternal life is conditional on man's part, for man must believe to receive life (John 3:16; 6:40; 20:30-13). And sinners must come to Christ to obtain life (John 5:40), and that the dead sinner must hear in order to live (John 5:25), and that those who refuse to hear will be destroyed for not hearing (Acts 3:23). Mr. Davis replied that the sinner must hear Christ, but not some preacher. Bro. Dunn then showed that in hearing the apostles, people hear Christ. He said, "He that heareth you heareth me." (Luke 10:16). Davis then tried to prove that no sinner can hear the word. He quoted "ye cannot hear my word." (John 8:43). Bro. Dunn showed that these people were trying to kill Jesus, and admitted that people can get so mad that they cannot hear the truth, but these people were not born in that condition, but their hearts waxed gross (Matthew 13:15). All sinners are not hardened to the extent they cannot hear. On Pentecost many "heard" and asked what to do. "Then Peter said unto them, repent, and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost." (Acts 2:37-38). Mr. Davis replied that these people already had remission of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit when they asked what to do. Bro. Dunn showed that this could not be true, for Peter said "shall receive" and not "ye have already received". Peter further exhorted them saying, "save yourselves." (Acts 2:40)

On the new birth Davis argued that it is in all point exactly like the natural birth, hence unconditional. Bro. Dunn showed we are born again in becoming children of God, and that Paul said, "ye are all children of God by faith in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:26); hence not born again without faith. "It is "by faith" that we become children of God, and not without faith. It was kept clear at all times that the faith that saves includes its proper obedience (Romans 16:26). When the walls of Jericho fell by faith, it meant an obedient faith (Hebrews 11:30). So we are children of God by faith, for as we are moved by faith, we are baptized into Christ (Galatians 3:26-27)

Davis wanted to know what became of the heathen. Dunn showed that, according to God's plan, all people had once had a chance to hear the gospel. (Colossians 1:23; Romans 10:18-20) It is not God's fault if whole nations have drifted into ignorance of the truth. According to Mr. Davis' doctrine, Christ did not die for all the heathen; how can he now claim they will all be saved? Dunn pushed him so hard that he admitted the following: (1) the training of children has nothing whatsoever to do with their eternal destiny. (2) He said no mother could know that her laughing baby is not one of the non elect, born to spend eternity in hell. (3) But to save himself from the shame of his doctrine, he denied that any non elect babies ever die in infancy. Then Dunn showed that all the babies on earth were drowned at the time of the flood; all babies in Sodom were destroyed; Herod killed all the babies in Bethlehem. Mr. Davis said all these were elect babies on these occasions. None were non elect. Bro. Dunn showed that if there were no non-elect babies at the flood, there is no proof that there ever were any at any time. He challenged Mr. Davis to prove that some little babies are born to be lost in hell with no provisions ever made for them to be saved. Dunn then showed: (1) Christ was sent to save the world (John 3:16; I John 4:14); (2) Christ came to save the world (John 12:47-48); (3) Christ died for all (II Corinthians 5:14-15); (4) Gave himself a ransom for all (I Timothy 2:6); (5) Gave his life for the whole world (John 6:51; I John 2:2); (6) Tasted death for every man (Hebrews 2:9). Mr. Davis ignored all these texts.

Bro. Dunn pressed Davis to tell us how much meaner the devil could have been to the non elect than God was, according to Mr. Davis' doctrine: God foreordained and unchangeably decreed that they should go to hell, even fixed their destiny before he brought them into the world. According to Davis, there are no greater sinners than the elect before they are saved. Why did God make no provision for them? Would Christ have had to suffer any more to have died also for them? Mr. Davis waited until his last speech, when he knew Bro Dunn would have no chance to reply.

Gus Nichols moderated for Dunn. Mr. Houk for Davis.
