C. L. Embrey vs Ben M. Bogard (Baptist)
January 30, 1938
Texarkana, Arkansas

(By Glenn A. Parks)

At Texarkana, Arkansas, last four days of December, 1937.

Debated general church proposition. The debate was interesting all four days. I believe Bogard labored as hard as he ever did to prove his proposition. He took Acts 1:21 for his proof text that the Baptist Church was set up during personal ministry of Jesus. It was just another dress put on the old argument that it was established during John the Baptist ministry. Then he did what no well-informed Baptist will do today - "rattling the chain of church succession." I believe Bogard knows that the Missionary Baptist Church cannot be traced back farther than 1607. He would rattle chains of sects that he could not indorse. But he is powerful when it comes to misinforming the uninformed. When Bogard got in the negative the last two days, he made one negative speech. He got out of the negative and became the affirmative. But this is Baptist debating.

On Mark 16:15-16, Bogard argued that a man could go to heaven without being baptized, and to illustrate he said: "Getting on the train is essential to going to Little Rock, but sitting down was not' a man could stand if he wished. J. N. Hall made this argument years ago. Bro. Embrey replied that according to Baptist doctrine, he would be in Little Rock as soon as he got on the train.

On Acts 2:38, he said "FOR" meant "because of". Mr. Bogard has a teacher at his theological school in Little Rock named J. L. Guthrie. Bogard said, "Greek and Hebrew literally drip from his fingers." The last day of the debate Bro. Embrey prepared a card which read: Does 'EIS' translated 'FOR: in Acts 2:38 mean 'because of'? This card was presented to Dr. Guthrie to sign the refuse as a Greek scholar. After writing on the bottom of the card these words: "This is figurative," he signed his name. Over the radio Bro. Embrey stated that he did not sign the card as it was written, but signed after putting his interpretation upon the passage. Bogard made a big howl over what Embrey said about it, and, to climax the whole affair, gave the card to Guthrie and told him to keep it. He said we would misrepresent him all over the country. Before making his first speech of the evening session, Bro. Embrey asked Dr. Guthrie for the card and he refused. Why refuse if he were right? Both Dr.Guthrie and Bogard knew they had arrayed themselves against the scholarship of the world when they took the position that 'EIS' in Acts 2:38 meant 'because of'. They also knew Guthrie might want another job of letting Greek and Hebrew 'drip from his fingers,' and such Greek reading as the above might hinder. Too, if he had refused to sign it, as he did sign it, it would have been a death blow to Bogard and his brethren in Texarkana. But that is Baptist style!

Many gospel preachers attended. The last night the large crowd moved into the Municipal Hall. All day speeches were broadcast through KCMC, Texarkana. Glenn A. Parks kept time for Embrey.
