An eight day discussion at Dardanelle, Arkansas (five miles from Russellville).
English scored one of the greatest victories for the truth in our history of defense. Not only did he refute every argument that Mr. Greene made, but brought concession after concession from him.
The second session began to erase Greene's sunny smile, and anon he grew worse and worse until his nerves were on edge; and unlike Greene, he rasped out two or three sharp criticisms against some in the audience but later apologized. But the trouble was that he had too many jokers in his cards, and as time went on, we noticed the deck grew smaller and smaller, and finally in desperation he grabbed the sword, but it was too late.
The courthouse was filled to its capacity with both white and colored, and, of all this number, it seemed that 95% were swayed by the forceful arguments that English used.
Two congregations and two preachers indorsed English to meet the challenger; and lest we have some who strain at this, as I hear we do, I say: with the same gospel that mutilated Greene's doctrine, "I'm your Brutus."
Brethren, this was not a dogfight, but honorable controversy between two gentlemen, where much and lasting good has been accomplished in and for the body of Christ.
