Unlike the Middle Ages when the Cross met the Crescent in mortal combat, this time it was subdued, scholarly and intelligent. Dr. Jack Evans, President of Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, Texas and Inan W. D. Muhammad, spiritual leader of the Community of Islam in the West (formerly known as the Nation of Islam or Black Muslims), whose headquarters are in Chicago.
Subject: Validity of the Bible and/or the Koran as the authentic word of God, the Messiahship of Jesus or Mohammad as God's messenger today; and the similar and dissimilar tenants of the two religions.
When the discussion, which was in the form of two thirty-minute speeches by each speaker, written questions from the audience and verbal answers from the speakers was over, I am sure that all Christians and believers in Christ could say as Constantine, when he spoke of the cross in the Fourth Century: "In this sign we conquer."
Dr. Evans sincerely and artistically magnified Christ and the cross when he so vividly vindicated Christ as the true and only Prophet for mankind, the Bible as God's only authoritative written revelation and the gospel of Christ as the power of salvation for the world. He asserted that W. D. Muhammad and the late Elijah Muhammad had said in their writings that the Bible pre-dated the Koran by a period of 600 years. He also revealed that the Koran consists of 95% of the Bible, much of which is taken out of its original context and dispensational setting. W. D. Muhammad never answered Bro. Evan's question as to why the Koran was never mentioned in the Bible, but the Koran speaks of the Bible. However, he did say the Bible would "blow ones brains out" if he did not handle it properly. In a later statement, Inam Muhammad plainly said that the Bible was full of lies and deceit.
Bro. Evans said that the Biblical Prophets such as Abraham, Moses and David, whom the World Community of Islam approves as authentic, prophesied the coming of Christ as the eternal messenger; yet said nothing about Mohammed, Muslims of the Koran. Inam Muhammed said that the name "Jesus Christ" cannot be found anywhere in the Old Testament. Bro. Evans responded by showing that the prophecy in Isaiah 7:14 about the virgin birth off Immanuel had reference to Christ by referring to its fulfillment in Matthew 1:23. And he received a thunderous applause when he read from the Koran, itself, where it mentions the virgin Mary giving birth to a son whose name was Christ Jesus; who was to be honored now and in the hereafter. Bro. Evans also pointed out that the Koran speaks of the gospel of Christ and the "People of the gospel" who are Christians.
President Evan's most potent point was his use of Christ as the Promised seed of Abraham in Genesis Chapters 17 and 21. Mohammed was an Arab, seed of Ishmael, and were "cast out" as far as the Promise was concerned. Christ, the Promised seed of Abraham, was to come through the lineage of Isaac. Although W. D. M. tried to make a comeback by falsely alluding to Ishmael being "cast out" because of Sarah's jealousy of Hagar, Ishmael's mother, Bro. Evans showed that this was God's will, and that God made a covenant with Abraham that through Isaac, his seed would be named. Galatians 3:16; 4:4-5, 22-31 was used as further documentation that Christ, not Muhammad, is the seed of Abraham emerging through Isaac. To this Muhammad had no Biblical or Koranic answer.
When W. D. M. saw the Koran and Bible worked against him, he began to allegorize and make symbolic the Bible until he could twist it in any direction. Evans quoted Peter to prove the Bible (scripture) is not privately interpreted. (II Peter 1:20) Scripture must agree with scripture. This ruined Muhammad because he had no scripture to use as a foundation. He was the very best example of privately interpreting the scriptures.
Muhammad said: "They that live in glass houses should not throw stones" and claimed it as Bible. Jesus was a Word instead of the Word. Muhammad was asked by Jesus worked miracles and Muhammad did not. Muhammad said the Bible teaches that Jesus never worked a miracle and the mention of them was symbolic. Bro. Evans proved Jesus worked miracles by quoting John 2:11. This brought an enthusiastic applause. Bro. Evans dynamically upheld God's truth.
