Lindsay Allen vs A. H. Batts (Holiness)
February 15, 1940

(By D. Ellis Walker, Decatur, Alabama)

Lindsay Allen vs A. H. Batts (Holiness) at Grant Street Church of Christ, Decatur, Alabama, February 1-2.

Bro. Allen made some clear-cut convincing arguments on baptism for remission of sins. Batts rambled around in the negative and audience was at a loss as to what he believed on any subject. He said that a person's sins were forgiven by faith, and that 'shall be saved' in Mark 16:16 referred to eternal salvation.

The second night Batts affirmed baptism of Holy Spirit was promised to believers. He made no distinction between baptism of Holy Spirit and gift of the Holy Spirit. One of Bro. Allen's negative speeches was considered to be among the best ever delivered in this section. Bro. Allen did excellent work in this, his first debate against a veteran of many debates.
