James W. Ballard vs McTues (Methodist)
August 6, 1914
Sulphur, Oklahoma
(By J. A. Ballard)

Began July 6 at Sulphur, Oklahoma at Church of Christ building on Vinita Avenue.

Mr. McTues affirmed: Sprinkling or pouring water upon a proper subject was the apostolic mode of baptism. An alien sinner is saved by faith alone. Ballard affirmed: Immersion is apostolic mode of baptism. This debate covered six days and twenty-four hours of solid debating. McTues denied "eis" in Acts 2:38 and Matthew 26:28 being prospective, and handed me his own book. I turned to it and handed it back to him, marked, and asked him to read it publicly. He did so and said: "Yes, it is there," then added that it said we were baptized into the remission of sins. After reading his proposition, he then read from his "Discipline" where it says the doctrine of justification only is a most wholesome doctrine and full of comfort. He then quoted Romans 5:1; I John 5:1 and others. Then he boldly asserted several times that the apostles says we are justified by faith only. So I arose and demanded that the moderators make him read the word "only" in any passage in the Book or make him retract the statement. He retracted it. Bro. Mansur moderated for Ballard. Prof. Finch moderated for McTues.
