W. T. Beasley vs J. F. Williams (Seventh-Day Adventist)
December 16, 1909
Bell's Branch, Hickman County

(By W. T. Beasley)

W. T. Beasley met J. F. Williams of Boaz, Alabama, Seven-Day Adventist at Bell's Branch, Hickman County, November 25. Mr. Williams a fair man but very week. "I drove him from Genesis 2 on down to Galatians 4 and asked him if he was the son of Hagar or Sarah. He said Sarah. I arose and asked the crowd to listen as I read Galatians 4:21-31. I asked Mr. Williams if he would stand to his previous confession, we would shake hands and debate would end. I then read and presented my hand to Mr. Williams some three or four times, begging him to stand to his confession, which he declined to do."

The following propositions were drawn up by the writer, the first one being signed by him, and I tried in vain to get Williams to sign the latter. (1) This is to certify that I, W. T. Beasley, do agree in the presence of this congregation, if Mr. J. F. Williams, my opponent in this debate, will show me the book, chapter, and verse where the Apostle Peter or any other apostle ever commanded anyone, Jew or Gentile, since the death of Christ, to keep Saturday or the 'Sabbath Day' or 'seventh day' in memory of the death of Christ, or took the 'Lord's Supper' on that day to step over with him and embrace his doctrine." (2) This is to certify that I, J. F. Williams, do agree in the presence of this congregation, if W. T. Beasley, my opponent in this debate, will show me the book, chapter and verse where the Apostle Peter or any other apostle ever taught or practiced meeting on the first day of the week (since the death of Christ) in remembrance of him, to step over with him and embrace the gospel of Christ. This he refused to sign after studying over it three days and three nights. I am sure this debate will do good.
