W. T. Beasley vs H. O. Daugherty
December 21, 1911
Bon Aqua, Tennessee

(By C. D. Crouch)

W. T. Beasley met with H. O. Daugherty (Missionary Baptist) at Bon Aqua, Tennessee, December 4-7.

Mr. Daugherty said he represented the "Baptist Church of Christ," and also called it the "Primitive Baptist Church" saying they were not the "Missionary Baptist". He further said that he was not what he was pleased to call a "Hardshell." In truth, he represents the foot washing element of the Missionary Baptist. It had been said of him that he was the ablest and most cultured debater of the south, but his friend who said it must have been unacquainted with the debaters of the south. He is really very weak and seems to be unconscious of his ignorance.

Each affirmed for two days: "The church with which I stand identified is apostolic in faith, doctrine, and practice." Bro. Beasley led the first two days. Neither speaker introduced any new arguments; but while Daugherty took positions not usually taken by Baptist debaters, he not infrequently took conflicting positions during the same speech. Bro. Beasley presented the truth in a plain, simple way, and I trust that good will result from his efforts. Bro. W. A. Sisco acted as moderator for Bro. Beasley, and Mr. Will Daugherty moderated for Mr. H. O. Daugherty

(Note: I do not know if the Baptist preachers were related.)
