W. T. Beasley vs S. F. Gibson (Missionary Baptist)
January 7, 1926
near Yuma, Tennessee

(By W. N. Abernathy)

Near Yuma, Tennessee, December 7-12, 1925 (6 days). This Baptist stronghold, New Hope, is where the noted Hall-Crum debate was held forty years ago.

The crowds started small but rapidly built up to audiences too large for the house. Best of feeling prevailed and much prejudice removed. Abernathy and Beasley entertained one night by Elder Herschell Hopper, moderator for Gibson.

Subject: General church question. Beasley affirmed his proposition. He is a very rapid speaker (rather too much so) and made a noble defense of his positions. The Baptists seemed pleased with Gibson. Gibson is easily irritated, but his moderator called him to order in a nice way. Gibson was very boastful and insisted on using the term "Campbellite". He claims this is his forty-forth debate with our people. Beasley has met the Baptist forty-two times. It appears that Gibson borrowed his arguments from Clark's "Campbellite Catcher."

An outstanding feature of the debate was Gibson presented a "chain" of churches from Dyersburg, Tennessee, back to the apostle John; but when called on for the books from which he claimed his authority, he could not be persuaded to produce them. Bro. Beasley showed that since his church could not be found in the New Testament his "chain" was no good. He also showed that some of his "links" were very far from modern dat Baptists.

W. N. Abernathy moderated for Beasley; Hopper for Gibson.
