Ulrich R. Beeson vs S. C. Swinney (Baptist)
January 22, 1925
Millville, Arkansas

(By John W. Hedge)

Bro. Beeson, Waldo, Arkansas, met S. C. Swinney in six-day debate at Millville, Arkansas. Two sessions daily (usual subjects). The attendance was so great that they outgrew the Baptist meeting house. I have attended a great many debates but I have never seen a greater interest manifested than in this one. A fine spirit prevailed among debaters and the people. This was Beeson's first debate and the brethren were well pleased at his defense of truth. Mr. Swinney has conducted ten debates and is on the average with Baptist polemic.

During the debate Swinney was constantly heard to say: "Beeson preaches that one must belong to his church in order to be saved." This he did to enlist the sympathy of those belonging to other churches. After he paraded this statement for four days, I put the following proposition before him: "The scriptures teach that salvation is in the New Testament Church." He signed it, and we met in the debate Sunday p.m. and night. Hundreds of people heard the discussion.
