At first 500 people came then 1,000 for rest of debate. Utley affirmed: "A true believer is saved before baptism." He used John 3:16-18; 5:24 and other passages. He claimed that the preposition "eis" is translated "into". Man is saved by believing "into" Christ before baptism. This was his main argument. Bro. Boaz challenged him to produce one standard translation that translated "eis" "into" in these passages. Utley used an inter-linear translation and read the English till he came to the preposition, then he would skip to the Greek "eis" thus trying to leave the impression on the people that it was translated "into". Bro. Boaz took the translation and showed the English was "on" instead of "into" in his own translation. Bro. Boaz pressed Utley until he became sore.
Bro. Boaz handled his opponent on every point and proved Utley's proposition to be false. Boaz introduces few arguments, but he defends them as few men do. I have heard some of our debaters use more oratory, wit, and sarcasm, but have never yet heard one who pressed his arguments as hard as Bro. Boaz. He is abundantly able to meet any man among the Baptists.
The brethren were well pleased with the discussion. Some of the most intelligent Baptists said Bro. Boaz was too much for Utley. The man who meets Utley must be ready to meet misrepresentations; for he is not partial, but misrepresents the Bible, our brethren, and his own at will.
