W. T. Boaz vs C. F. Cayce (Primitive Baptist)
January 9, 1908
Perry County, Tennessee

(By I. B. Bradley)

Held in Rockhouse Church, Perry County, Tennessee, December 10-14, 1907.

Cayce affirmed for two days: "The Bible teaches that all for whom Christ died will be saved in heaven." Cayce showed fear of the logical deductions from his position, saying he was not bound by his proposition to say whether Christ died for few or many, or whether they were the elect or the whole race of man. He made the atonement the basis of his contention, and claimed that the scriptures upon which he relied showed that "all would be saved," or that language was a failure and inspiration false. He relied on Isaiah 53:6; Hebrews 9:25-26. Cayce had no idea of the division of the Bible. He made no difference between the propitiation for sin and that Christ's death only procured satisfaction for sins, but did not apply the blood to the soul in order to save.

Bro. Boaz showed that Cayce's scriptures did not even hint at the doctrine of special atonement. Boaz used Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16; Titus 2:12-14; Revelation 22:17 showing the universality of the gospel of Christ and of his death or else God would tantalize and mock man with the offer of salvation, when he knew the majority of mankind were helplessly and hopelessly destined to perdition.

Boaz affirmed: "Baptism as a condition to salvation" - - a command may be a condition of pardon or blessing and there be no virtue in the thing employed, illustrated by the fall of Jericho, healing of Naaman, the salvation of Rahab. The virtue is in the commander; hence we look beyond the command - - the thing employed - - to the commander. So no man in the church of God looks to the water in baptism, but to the Savior who commanded it. Cayce ignored or quibbled. He appealed to sympathy for the pious unimmersed.

Bro. Boaz is a strong debater. He uses few scriptures but makes them clear and forceful. Cayce is weak in debater, hardly average, if this debate is an index to his strength. F. M. Pope of Boyle City, Illinois moderated for Cayce. I. B. Bradley moderated for Boaz. Some brethren present: L. F. Marshal, J. A. Sisco, W. A. Sisco, Bro. Hudson.
