Debate at Belmont, Mississippi September 10-13.
Propositions: establishment of Church. Bro. Bradley made argument from Mark 9:1. Mr. Gaugh answered: "Certainly we believe the power comes when the Holy Spirit comes. We have this power in our revivals. What does that have to do with the establishment of the church?"
On third day Gaugh affirmed: "The sinner receives pardon when he believes in answers to prayer." He caused the ground of "faith alone" and "grace alone". Bro. Bradley turned over every argument by showing "obedient faith" was the faith that saves.
Fourth day Bradley affirmed: "Baptism to the penitent believer." He made unanswerable arguments from (Matthew 3:7) (Mark 16:15-16) (Acts 2:38) (I Peter 3:21). He told how we get into the kingdom (John 3:5) and how we get into Christ (Galatians 3:27) (Romans 6:3). Gaugh made a fight on "eis" in (Acts 2:38). He said "because of". Bradley asked him to give one standard translation. He could not.
Bradley's impregnable arguments cut Gaugh to the quick. He began to yell "Bradley is going down to defeat." The first day he was nice, but said on second and third day, "I won't call them what they are!" Then he would add "Uncle Alecs boys". But on the fourth day he saw defeat staring him in the face. To cover his defeat and stir up prejudice he shouted, "Campbellites", a violation of rules. Bro. Bradley was the gentleman all the way through. He was strong in defense of truth. R. L. Shook was moderator for Bradley. Mr. Robinson moderated for Gaugh. Both were from Jackson, Tennessee.
