This debate was held in the Courthouse in Charleston, Mississippi, October 25-29.
Three subjects discussed: action of baptism, the design and proper subjects for baptism. Mr. Dye is an old gentleman full of experience on the polemic platform. He speaks of having met Pickens, Caskey and others in debate in his younger days. He tries to make the impression that some "great one has come," and that every assertion and criticism of his must be taken at par. As a specimen of his criticism, take Mark 16:16: "He that believeth, having been baptized, shall be saved." According to him, there is not an English version in existence that gives the mind of the Spirit. The old gentleman's egotism was pitiable at times. He could not be induced to notice an argument that called in question his scholarship.
Bro. Bradley looked somewhat youthful in the presence of such a patriarch. Some thought it presumption for him to attempt to measure swords with such a giant. But, like David, he went into the battle clothed with the armor of God, knowing the truth is mighty and will prevail.
The brethren here are delighted with the way the debate terminated. They will recommend Bro. Bradley to meet any man who opposes the truth as it is in Jesus.
Bro. J. W. Shepherd moderated for Bradley and to his wise counsel is due much of the good that is to follow. I am to follow the debate with a meeting, and trust to reap some harvest from the recent sowing.
