In December, D. W. Pauley (Seventh-Day Adventist) signed to debate Bro. Bradley at Delina, Tennessee. May 6.
Bro. Bradley with J. W. Shepherd came on time and found Pauley and Mr. John A. Cargile on the grounds. The debate for four days was to be on Punishment of wicked and unconscious dead. Mr. Pauley said he would debate for only two days and would not debate otherwise. We agreed because John A. Cargile agreed to debate for two days. However, Mr. Cargile failed to fill out his time in his last speech of first day and refused to debate anymore. Mr. Pauley then took his place and denied the next day. Mr. Pauley is one of the strongest Adventists, pleasant in manner, and a fine speaker. However, Bro. Bradley was too much for him and met every argument that he made, asked many questions he never answered.
Let me say at this time that our brethren sometimes make a mistake in endorsing men for debates who are not debaters. Brethren, when you have a debate, get a man like Bro. Bradley or someone who has had experience, and let the others get one of their best men, and have an honorable discussion, not a wrangle.
Bro. Shepherd's ruling in this debate was so fair and nonpartisan that the Adventists suggested on the second day that he be the only moderator; hence everything moved along nicely to the close, the speakers manifesting a Christian spirit throughout. The attendance and attention were excellent and the hospitality of people in Delina unexcelled.
