J. W. Shepherd goes to Detroit
February 18, 1915

(By I. B. Bradley)
(The person described is not named)

"We have been very intimately associated and identified in the defense of the truth for the last five years. He has been with me, as moderator, in about a dozen debates, and has rendered invaluable assistance in a number of ways. Being in possession of a good library, possibly the best of its kind in the State, I was at liberty to use anything any time, and had the advantage of his knowledge and research, which has been of great benefit to me in preparation for the discussions I have had in the last ten years. We have met the strongest men among the Second Adventists, the Missionary Baptist, the old school Baptist, and the Methodist champion of Mississippi. He is the best moderator I have ever seen, being perfectly acquainted with the rules governing controversy and thoroughly conscientious and honorable in his treatment of disputants. He stands for honorable and decent controversy, stripped of all frivolity and levity, and urges that the issues be treated upon their worth and the speeches be dealt with as to their merit. He is absolutely fair and honest towards both sides. I shall sorely miss him in my debates.

For ten years I know his purity of thought and purity of action. His conversation was chaste; his bearing gentile and courteous; his influence good. His reverence for the word of God is very great; and many times I have seen the flush of righteous indignation color his face when a man has spoken slightingly or irreverently of the truth. He has helped to take stigma from debates.
