W. J. Brown vs Shuler (Adventist)
March 5, 1914
Bowling Green, Florida

(By Felix H. Harlan)

January 17-22 at Bowling Green, Florida.

Shuler affirmed: The seventh day Sabbath is bind on Christians today. He used the regular Adventist arguments that have been exploded again and again.

Bro. Brown affirmed: The first day of the week. He quoted many scriptures showing (1) that Jesus arose on first day of the week; (2) that he met with his disciples on that day and gave the great commission; (3) that the Holy Spirit descended; (4) first gospel sermon was preached; (5) the church established on that day; (6) disciples met to break bread on that day. (Acts 20:7; Luke 24:44-49; John 20:19-26; Acts 2:1)

Elder Shuler did as all men will sometimes do when hard pressed - use unlawful means in order to sustain their arguments. He denied the great commission being given on that day, and also "after eight days" being that day, and also denied Pentecost being the first day. Bro. Brown said the main reason we come together on first day of the week is to break bread in remembrance of his death and not to rest. We do not regard a day as much as we observe an advent.

Bro. Brown conducted himself like a true Christian. Elder Shuler is a man of much ability. He knows too much to be an Adventist.
