Thomas A. Burton vs W. L. Odum (Missionary Baptist)
March 16, 1944
Johnson City, Tennessee

(By J. Edward Nowlin)

At Johnson City, Tennessee in the courthouse, February 24-25.

Great crowds despite rainy weather and gas rationing. People came from Greenville and Abingdon, Virginia. It was the first public debate for both men. The atmosphere showed friendliness and earnestness. Only one of the rules of honorable controversy was violated. Mr. Odum let his 'righteous indignation' get the best of him and referred to his opponent as a 'demon-possessed man bound for hell.' It was my privilege to call his hand on that and to point out that if he could prove Thomas Burton to be the devil's stepmother, that would not prove his proposition. He failed to apologize, but kept with the issue.

Bro. Burton held his feet to the fire on the issue. The last night I challenged Odum to debate me at Johnson City and include 1,000 year reign. He has not answered. This was the third religious debate in a little over a year. I met two digressives on music in '43 with Bro. Burton as my moderator. The searchlight of truth always reveals coils of error.
