Jim Chism vs J. W. Brewer (Missionary Baptist)
July 23, 1908
Grapevine, Texas

(By Jim Chism)

On June 30, I engaged Elder J. W. Brewer, a Missionary Baptist of the "Landmark" order in a six day's debate on special propositions, six in all, involving the kingdom, baptism for remission of sins, work of Holy Spirit, apostasy.

The brethren were well pleased here at Grapevine, Texas. Mr. Brewer is a man of ordinary native ability but is uneducated; he also stutters quite a bit, which is his only forte as a debater, making everything he says appear funny. He worked hard to deceive the people about our true positions. This seems to be a weapon used by all sectarian debaters. They seem to think that if they can make the people believe we teach a thing we do not teach, that they have answered what we do teach. Their strongest point in all my debates with them (and I have held right at one hundred - in all, about 600 days, two sessions each day) is to make the people misunderstand what we do teach. So I have learned to keep this part prominently before the hearers. In so doing, I keep the truth always before them.

At the close of this debate I think nearly every person present pressed forward to press my hand. My opponent at times acted ugly. He called me "a whited sepulcher", "buzzard", and an "infidel". Of course I knew why, and just kept cool and kept the truth before them. Several preachers attended: W. J. Richardson, Wells Point, Texas; J. B. Lashlee, McKinney, Texas; Bro. Reeks and Henderson, Tyler, Texas; Bro. Baker, Mineola, Texas; W. A. Smith of Golden, Texas.

I have learned that rough speech on the part of my adversary does not hurt me, but him. I just call attention to it and let it pass and they usually quit.
