J. W. Chism vs W. A. Jarrell (Baptist)
February 11, 1909

(By J. W. Chism)

My debate with W. A. Jarrell at Grapeland, Texas, is now a thing of the past. The debate was poorly attended for two reasons: (1) The Baptists had refused to debate, save in Grapeland, which was five miles from the community where the debate originated, and the people at Grapeland did not want it; (2) Mr. Jarrell proved to be a scrapbook - manuscript man, and not an excellent reader, and bored the audience. I consider him a flat failure as a debater. His whole effort was to make the people believe that we teach what we do not teach.

In his affirmative he read extracts from various writers to try to show what the Baptists have done. On apostasy he surrendered the proposition, practically by saying: 'Of course, it is possible for me to stand on the railroad and let the train kill me, but I'm not going to do it; but he must prove that Christians will apostatize and be lost.' When I called his attention to the admission, he tried to crawfish. I left the brethren well pleased. I'm sure much good will come of the debate.

This leaves me near Waurika, Oklahoma ready to begin a debate tonight with the Mormons (Lamoni Folks). This will be my eighth debate with them; one debate was with an apostle.

On February 9, I am to begin a four-day debate at Tenaha, Texas with the Baptists who are represented by Ben M. Bogard, of Little Rock, Arkansas. One debate pending with Adventists in February latter part.
