J. W. Chism vs Ben M. Bogard
March 4, 1909
Tenaha, Texas

(By Ben West)

February 9-12. Two sessions of two hours each day -- Tenaha, Texas.

(1) Bogard affirmed: Man is so depraved or disposed to sin that he cannot come to God, and in his conversion God sometimes uses his word with additional power, and sometimes without the word. (2) Chism affirmed: The kingdom or Church of Christ was established on the first Pentecost following the resurrection of Jesus. (3) Bogard affirmed: Salvation is by grace, in answer to prayer, without baptism. (4) Chism affirmed: The possibility of a child of God to so apostatize as to be finally lost.

In addition to the regular debate, there were two night sessions of two hours each. On the first night, Bogard endeavored to establish a chain of Baptist Church succession from Tenaha, Texas February 10, 1909 to A.D. 31. On the second night Bro. Chism affirmed: The work of Alexander Campbell and his coadjutors was the cleansing of the sanctuary spoken of in Daniel 8:14.

The debate was deeply interesting throughout and well attended. About twenty gospel preachers attended. All visitors on both sides were treated with courtesy. All seekers for truth were well pleased with Bro. Chism's work. He relied solely on God's eternal truth.
