J. W. Chism vs J. S. Newman (Primitive Baptist)
September 8, 1910
Afton, Texas

At Afton, Texas, August 2-5.

General church question. More than 500 people attended. Each day two beeves were barbecued and done to perfection. Thee good people of the town united hands to make everyone feel at home. The wonderful feeling lasted all week. Preaching brethren were: J. M. Ferguson, from Cottonwood, Texas; Minor Wilson, M. M. Young, John C. Stephens, Sr. From Dickens. Others were: J. W. Boling, John C. Stephens, Jr., W. E. Broyles, C. W. Smith and J. O. Adams. About six Baptist preachers were there.

Bro. Chism affirmed church question. Used Daniel 2:44 prophecy. Preparatory work to build church on Pentecost. Mr. Newman replied by reading church history and giving syllogistic arguments citing 18 scriptures with comment. Up to that time Chism had only used the Bible and showed how Church of Christ used it only for doctrine. Then he borrowed Newman's history book and showed how Newman contradicted his own authorities. Newman fell on this point and all could see it.

In the affirmative Newman used the Bible some but spent time reading from writings of our brethren and talking about the "digressives." Bro. Chism destroyed Newman's line of church succession. But the Bible and the Bible alone is our guide in church affairs. The same seed (the seed of the kingdom) sown (preached) heard, believed, and obeyed, will produce the same kind of members of the church as the church on Pentecost. All that could have added to the victory would have been for Elder Newman and his followers to have made an unconditional surrender.
