Dan P. Craig (Walnut, Mississippi) vs B. G. Whitehurst (Methodist) (Coldwater, Mississippi)
September 28, 1933)
near Ashland, Mississippi

Began July 19 at Friendship, near Ashland, Mississippi.

Mr. Whitehurst affirmed: "The scriptures teach that infants are proper subjects for Christian baptism." He used Exodus 14:19-26; Acts 16:14-15; Matthew 19:13-15 and used the usual arguments for his infant baptism theory. Bro. Craig called his attention to I Corinthians 10:1-2; that Paul said it was the fathers that were baptized, not infants; that in the case of Lydia he assumed the very thing he was to prove; that Matthew 19:13-15 did not even remotely refer to infant baptism.

Bro. Craig affirmed for one day: "The scriptures teach that water baptism to a penitent believer is for, in order to, the remission of past sins." He showed in every conversion that baptism was necessary; that it stands between the sinner and salvation; that the remission off sins and gift of the Holy Spirit always comes after baptism. Mr. Whitehurst tried in vain to overthrow these facts. Mr. Whitehurst is above average for a debate. After second day he asked that the debate be closed. So the Methodist cause went down in defeat.
