T. C. Fox vs T. W. Matthews (Missionary Baptist)
April 1, 1909
Bagdad, Jackson County, Tennessee

(By N. W. Proffitt)

Four days (March 15-18) at Bagdad, Jackson County, Tennessee.

Establishment of Church and Baptism.

Bro. Fox asked, "Would you baptize a man on the public highway upon the confession of his faith, as Philip did the eunuch?" Matthews answered, "Under similar circumstances I would." Bro. Fox told him that he would not be a Baptist if he did so, for they voted on the reception of members.

On baptism, Matthews got tangled on Acts 2:38. He said a plural verb and a singular verb could not be joined together to secure the same results. He had repentance first plural and then singular and baptism plural. Bro. Fox told him the Holy Spirit had joined the two verbs together by the coordinate conjunction "and", which conjunction connects words, clauses and phrases, of the same rank. Matthews said that baptism saves us symbolically; that we are really saved at faith, and are symbolically saved when we are baptized. Bro. Fox told him that symbols always went before the real, referring to some types and shadows of the old Testament - the temple a type of the church.

On the fourth day Matthews affirmed that the Missionary Baptist Church is apostolic in origin, doctrine and practice. On this proposition most of the three days was reproduced. Fox asked, "Where did any apostle ever call himself a Baptist?" Matthews laid his hand on the Bible, "It is in the word of eternal truth." Fox pressed him with the question and received the same answer. He asked any one in the audience to read about any man who called himself a member of the Baptist Church. None did.

This was the first debate for Fox. He was master of the situation. The debate drew big crowds.
