A. G. Freed vs R. H. Pigue
August 13, 1903
Troy, Tennessee

(By W. J. Johns)

At Troy, Tennessee, July 20-23.

Bro. Freed was master of the situation. He proved both by Bible and scholarship of world that immersion is only mode of baptism. Pigue said 'baptize' had both a classic and a sacred meaning; one of its classic meanings is 'immerse'; and the sacred meaning is 'sprinkle' or 'pour'. Freed showed ably the fallacy of such reasoning. Pigue made the usual arguments on "infant baptism." Freed pressed Pigue to find a case of 'infant baptism' in the Bible. This Pigue failed to do. Then Freed showed that a case of infant baptism would include: (1) an infant baptized, (2) the person baptizing it, (3) when baptized, (4) where baptized, (5) how baptized, (6) for what baptized.

The third proposition was baptism for remission of sins. Freed was strong on this proposition, especially on Peter's statement in Acts 2:38. Elder Pigue was weaker here than we expected him to be.

Fourth proposition: Pigue affirmed that sprinkling or pouring water upon a candidate is baptism. Pigue took the usual position. Freed pressed Pigue to show where water unmixed was ever sprinkled or poured upon any person for anything. This Pigue failed to do.

To those who desire the truth sustained need not fear to call Bro. Freed. He never leaves unturned anything introduced by an opponent.
