N.B. Hardeman vs I. N. Penick (Baptist)
July 19, 1906
Right, Tennessee - Near Coffee Landing on Tennessee River

(By L. L. Brigance)

We have no congregation there, only a few scattered disciples. The debate was held under a large tent, and attended by the largest crowds seen at such a discussion in years - 1,000 daily. Two subjects: Baptism to penitent believers and establishment of the church. The debate was clean. All irrelevant matter was eliminated and the questions were discussed on their merits.

Perhaps none of our brethren ever sustained their contention more ably than bro. H. He is a speaker of fine address. He thoroughly knows the ground to be covered, and he knows the scriptures. With scripture and logic he erects such a bulwark of truth that it is absolutely impregnable. He presents his plea in a spirit of fairness and candor that will always commend it to his hearers. The faith of Christ will never suffer in his hands, it matters not who assails it.

Elder Penick is perhaps the ablest Baptist debater in the country. He is one of the fairest men among sectarian debaters. If he had the truth, he could defend it; but no man can defend error in the face of truth properly presented. He spent most of his time in "talking around" and leading the minds of the people away from the real issue. It was impossible to get him to come up and meet the argument fairly and honorably. "He wiggles in and he wiggles out, and leaves the people all in doubt" as to what his real position is.

The debate will do good. All such discussions will do good. It was on a plane that will honor the name of Christ, rather than bring reproach upon it. The very best of good feeling prevailed among the audience and between the speakers until the last "Amen" was said. There were 12-14 Baptist preachers present, including G. M. Savage, of the Southwestern Baptist University, Jackson, Tenn. There were only two of us, boys at that; but all the Baptist preachers the world cannot successfully combat one man armed with the everlasting truth. Wherever the cause of Christ needs an able advocate, no better man can be found than N. B. Hardeman.
