N. B. Hardeman vs Leake (Christian Church)
July 27, 1916
Columbus, Mississippi
(By W.H. Owen)

June 13-16 at Columbus, Miss.

The debate was an important event in Miss. because digressives had their strongest and ablest debater - also music had not been discussed there. Most users had never discussed the question and thought of it as an expediency. Twenty preachers came from seven states. We expected Leake to be a scholarly man and able an defender of their cause. We were disappointed. As a speaker, scholar, logician and debater he fell far below our expectations.

In the main he is fair, but when hard pressed will seek to gain an advantage over you. He did this several times with respect to opponent's position or arguments and authorities quoted. Some sectarians said they believed in isnt. music, but thought Leake was defeated. He failed to prove inst. music by the Bible. He spent much time proving Jesus used inst. music. His fight was made on "psallo." He abandoned all other arguments and took his stand on "psallo." He said psallo meant to sing with an instrument. Bro. Hardeman easily showed from the highest authority that, while in ancient or classic Greek the word carried the idea of instrumental accompaniment, it has no such meaning in N. T. Greek, and no respectable lexicographer so define it. The world's scholarship stood behind Hardeman.

In his affirmative bro. H. in a clear, logical and convincing manner, set forth the definition and essentials of worship. He showed that inst. music cannot be an act of faith; that it is an addition to God's law and a going beyond his decrees, and therefore sinful.

At close of debate bro. H. Said sic churches requested the debate and asked Leake if he would meet him six times. He said he would. The digressives do not want a debate at these six places - we think the debates will not occur.
