E. R. Harper vs Jesse Cob (Baptist)
December 17, 1931
Enola, Arkansas

(By Coleman Overby)

Debate at Enola, Ark, Nov. 10-13.

Bro. Harper affirmed: 1) the design of baptism, 2) possibility of apostasy.

Mr. Cobb affirmed: 1) establishment of the church, 2) faith without further acts of obedience procures salvation. Each speaker conducted himself in a fine way. The discussion was wholly free from personalities and mudslinging. The audiences large and exceptionally good.

Both participants were reared in the community where the debate was conducted, and they did their very best. This was the first experience of bro. Harper in a religious discussion. It would never have been suspected by any hearer. He did the work of an experienced debater. The church was more than pleased. No one enjoyed the debate so much as bro. Harper's father, who is also a fine preacher. Mr. Cobb is decidedly one of the cleanest and fairest debaters among the Baptists. We firmly believe he will one day accept the truth. The debate will do good.
