John Hayes vs E. S. Haynes (Missionary Baptist)
May 18, 1905
Desoto, Texas

(By J. B. Cathey)

Bro. Hayes is a young man and in his first debate. We are all proud of the way he handled the scriptures.

Haynes is over 60, preacher 40 years, but he got tangled up several times by bro. Hayes arguments. Bro. Hayes forced him to admit that the name Baptist is unscriptural, wrong to vote on members. Haynes even admitted baptism was necessary to salvation. He also said he dislikes the mourner's bench. Many in the audience admitted Hayes had Haynes badly worsted from start to finish.

A very amusing incident occurred on the last night in Haynes speech. When he had spoken 7 minutes on his last 30 minute speech, he stopped and ask his moderator how much time he had. "You have pretty well all of it." He labored on 8 more minutes and said he was done - and he was "done up."

Everything passed off nicely with nothing to mar the kind feelings existing from the start. We rejoice that the truth was vindicated. Over 600 people each. Bro. Hayes certainly acquitted himself grandly and showed that he is well versed in the scriptures. He did not seek this debate, as he had never before debated, but the way he handled the scriptures and controverted points led many to think that he was an old debater.
