John W. Hedge vs Ben Bogard (Baptist)
January 8, 1942
Sulphur Springs, Texas

(By Felix W. Tarbet)

At Sulphur Springs, Tex. Dec. 9-12, 1941 - unusual participation.

The debate was kept on a high plane, largely through the dignified efforts of bro. Hedge to present the truth without resorting to personal reflections and mudslinging.

Bogard sings the same song in every debate, and this was not exception. He talks about Floyd Collins in the Sand cave; Mk. 16:15,16 being spurious; making a savior out of the church; and states that a Christian could not possibly go to hell even if he tried to do so.

If you know John Hedge, it is superfluous for me to tell you that the truth was not "crushed to the earth" in this debate. Some of the Baptists were very free to say that Bogard was not meeting bro. Hedge's arguments as he should, but that he was simply making a big noise to cover up.

Preachers present: Buford Holt, J. D. Garrett, Linwood Bishop, Ray Lanier, Lee Reynolds, E. H. Smith, John Stevens, Jack Hardcastle, Raymond Whittington, Robert Turner, Bryan Vinson, Earnest Grizzard, Gayle Oyler and Charles Goodnight. 18-20 Baptist preachers attended including 9 preacher students from the Baptist school at Little Rock. Felix Tarbet moderated for Hodge.
