John T. Hinds vs J. B. Erwin (Mormon, Reorganized LDS)
December 5, 1901
Hiwasse, Arkansas

(By Unknown)

Debate at Hiwasse, Ark - Nov. 5-8 1901.

Arguments taken mainly from "Book of Mormon" and "Doctrine and Covenant." Here are some of their arguments.

I - They claim in the organization a "first presidency." This is composed of a chief apostle and high priest (who is president, seer and revelator of the church) and two associate counselors. Of course there is no such office in a New Testament church.

II - They have a "Patriarch." This is another unscriptural office.

III - They have a high priest and priests as official classes, which violates the scriptures.

IV - They claim to be the "seventy," which class of people were never brought this side of the cross.

V - They claim to have inspired apostles like the N. T. It cannot be true because: a) none have seen Jesus and cannot be witnesses to his resurrection. b) no one is ever qualified as Christ's apostles were. c) No one can do the work they did. d) The authority of Christ's apostles is still binding. e) None of the apostles ever received the gift of the Spirit by the laying on of hands, yet, L. D. S. apostles claim to receive it this way. f) Jesus apostles never apostatized after being endued, but L. D. S. apostles apostatized.

These questions kill the Mormons.

I - As you believe in continued revelations, will you give one new truth in your revelations not already found in the Bible?

II - Why was the Bible written in a known language and translated by uninspired men, while the "golden plates" from which the Book of Mormon was taken was miraculously preserved for 1400 years and Joseph Smith was inspired to translate them?

III - Can your missionaries preach in French and German when they have never studied these languages? Why not?

IV - Is the commission given to the 12 before Pentecost still binding?

V - Is the Bible sufficiently confirmed by the miracles which it records? If so, what need is there for more miracles?

VI - Why were your apostles called by a committee of three, while Christ personally called his apostles?

VII - Did not Paul say after Cornelius was converted, that there is "one baptism"? Then which can you keep, water baptism or Holy Spirit baptism?
