C. E. Holt vs J. N. Hall (Missionary Baptist)
May 30, 1901
Linden, Tennessee

March 26 - 28, 1901 - on purpose and design of baptism.

Hall is editor of the American Baptist Flag and gave the following false report of the debate, April 4, 1901. "Elder Hall was called by his brother, L. W. Sloan, to come to Linden and attend to a very belligerent 'Campbelite' in these parts. He went and completely demolished Campbellism in that community. He seeks to make the impression on the minds of the readers that the leading citizens of Linden have a high appreciation of his work in debate." Hall says: "Congressman Sims, Judge Sloan, and several other worthy citizens sought to do us honor, and a purse of more than $50 was placed in our hands as an expression of appreciation for the service rendered in overthrowing Campbellism in the community."

Congressman Sims denied this. "I know nothing about a purse of more than $50 being placed in the hands of Mr. Hall as he reported in the American Baptist Flag." How is this for honor?

It would seem that was an unusual thing for Hall to receive $50 for a debate. His boastfulness in regard to this instance indicate that such things with him are of rare occurrence. I have known men of far less pretensions that Hall to receive twice that amount for a debate, and they were representing what Hall calls "Cambellism." Linden elders wrote : "We take pleasure in stating to the brotherhood at large that bro. Holt, who affirmed baptism is for remission of sins, defended his position to our satisfaction, and that Hall's report does not bro. Holt a great injustice. We further state that Hall has greatly misrepresented the facts in the case, and that the church in Kinden is in a more prosperous condition than at any period of its history." (Nine men signed.)
