J. H. Horton vs E. Morgan (Saints Church)
April 1, 1915
Near Somerville, Alabama

(By M. A. Creel)

On Feb. 28, 1915, bro. J. H. Horton met Mr. Morgan, who is a member of the modern "Saints Church," in a friendly discussion at Old Union church house near Somerville, Ala.

Bro. Horton affirmed: "The scriptures teach that baptism is one condition of pardon to the alien sinner." Bro. Horton made nine arguments and sufficient scriptural proof. Eight of these arguments Mr. Morgan did not attempt to answer. Not paying attention violated rule no. 6 of Hedges' Logic. The moderators did not hold him to this rule, but the truth did not suffer. Mr. Morgan tried to evade the arguments by showing what he claimed to be three examples where people "got salvation without seeing a drop of water." Saul's cases was the first one shown. He claimed Saul was saved before baptism. This was overthrown by Acts 22:16. Cornelius was his second example (Acts 10). The man healed of the palsy was his third.

Morgan affirmed: "The scriptures teach that present-day Christians can perform miracles, such as healing the sick." He did not and could not bring a passage of scripture to prove his proposition. He merely showed cases when Jesus and the apostles performed miracles. Bro. Horton answered all. Mr. Morgan's last hopes were hinged on the nine spiritual gifts mentioned in I Cor. 12. Alas, his position died hard in (I Cor.13:8-10) where Paul showed that these gifts were in part, and that "that which is in part shall be done away," give way to the more perfect thing, which is the collected "perfect law of liberty" (Jam. 1:25).

At this point Mr. Morgan saw his position dying and resorted to sophistry, thus violating another rule in logic. If there was ever a victory for the truth, then this debate must have been one. J. T. Self moderated for bro. Morgan.
