Bro. Howell affirmed: "That immersion in water is scriptural baptism." He showed that when Christ gave the commission (Matt. 28:19) he used a word that never means "pour" or "sprinkle" and that Christ illustrated the meaning of the word by his own act (Matt. 3:13-17). Also by John the Baptist (Matt. 3:3-6). He showed that the Greek has three words for the three different actions, immerse, sprinkle or pour, which would not have been so if they meant the same. He illustrated the use of these different words by II Kings 5:14; Heb. 11:28; Rev.16:1,2.

Bro. Howell by Mk. 1:4,5; John 3:23; Acts 8:38,39 and Rom. 6:3-6 that immersion is the act of baptism. His defense was strong and Garland made but little effort to meet his arguments. He spent most of his time talking about Holy Ghost baptism and sanctification. He was completely routed when he affirmed sprinkling or pouring for baptism.
