R. L. Huffman vs Ariel West (Primitive Baptist)
November 9, 1939
McKenzie, Alabama

(By R. L. Huffman)

R. L. Huffman met Ariel West, Austin, Tx. at McKenzie, Ala.

West affirmed the Primitive Baptist church is scriptural in origin, doctrine and practice. He tried to locate his church during the ministry of Christ . But it was shown that the church was in a preparatory state then. I took all of his proof texts and cleared up his contradictions of nearly 30 other scriptures. He tried his hand on history and the chain of succession, but he failed to show any evidence of the P. B. church in name, doctrine, or practice before 1607.

On a chart I demonstrated that they depend upon a direct experience of so-called grace, independent of the scriptures, and that their baptism, fellowship, doctrine, and practice depend upon such an experience, and in so doing they cut themselves loose from the scriptures and could not be scriptural. No answer was made to this.

West's attempt to analyze grammatically Acts 2:38 put him in position of eliminating Paul from having his sins washed away (Acts 22:16), Peter of being saved (I Pet. 3:21), and the church of being cleansed (Eph. 5:26). He took the position that if the church apostatized, the gates of hell had prevailed against it. (Matt. 16:18). But it was shown that all Christians might die and yet be members of the church beyond the grave. But according to West's arguments, when the Primitive Baptists die they are no longer members of the church, and that his church had no place in heaven.

He said I was the fairest man he had ever met in debate. He said this in his first speech. About 500 people attended this debate.
