Debate held in Baptist church at Gamaliel, Ky. and closed Jan. 2 (4 days). Weather was bad but crowds great. Many expressions were given in behalf of victory for the truth gained in the debate.
Many Baptists manifested and expressed dissatisfaction and defeat on the part of their man. Sloan weakened the first day, and floundered helplessly from one foolish thing to another. He boasted about his great ability as a debater and used their old sugar stick of slurring about "Campbellisms." and the old goat pen at Brush Run, Va.
Bro. Hunter pressed Sloan hard with many scriptural arguments put in a logical way and set forth on the board, many of which Sloan never attempted to answer. He was pressed throughout the debate to tell what baptism saves us from as mentioned in I Pet. 3:2, but he never did reply. On the work of the H. S. he asserted that every time the H. S. operates it makes a good old Miss. Baptist.
Bro. Hunter introduced him to Balaam's ass (Num. 22) as one of his brethren according to his own statement. And in many other awkward positions during the debate. But the blow that knocked him clear out was the last day when bro. Hunter pressed him on apostasy; and, with many other scriptures on that point, he gave (Num. 25:8; Gal. 5:19; I Cor. 10:8). Sloan said with much emphasis that if a child of God were to commit fornication and be killed in the very act, as shown in Num. 25, he believed he would go straight to heaven. The audience clearly expressed their disapproval. Even the Baptists were angry with him. They said he was tearing up the Baptist church just as fast as he could.
