Debate held in large theater in North Forth, Tx. J. E. Pippin he "defender" of their faith is a very good debater if it takes dodging and perverting the truth to make a good debater. Yet, he is a nice man in debate.
Ligon affirmed: "People obeying the gospel must be baptized in water into the name of the Father and Son and of the Holy Ghost." Pippin affirmed: "People today must receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost to be saved as in the days of the apostles."
In denying my proposition, Mr. Pippin's effort was to show that God, the Son and the Holy Ghost are one and the same personality, and, therefore, baptism must be administered only "in the name of the Lord Jesus." I showed that all we do, in word or deed, must be done "in the name of the Lord Jesus" - that is, by his authority - and that there is a vast difference in the words "in" and "into." I proved by several passages the utter foolishness of the claim that God, Christ and the Holy Ghost are one and the same personality. The husband and wife are one, all Christians are one, but certainly they do not become one personality. I showed that if poor, lost souls must receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost in order to be saved, and God does not baptize them with the Holy Ghost, ther God himself is responsible for the damnation of all who are
lost. No one even in the days of the apostles had to receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost to be saved, and, therefore, certainly not today.
The large theater was nearly filled each night, which gave me an opportunity to preach the gospel to many people. I believe this debate did more good than any I have ever held. If Mr. Pippin comes your way and brags, blows and challenges (and this he will do), I shall be delighted to come and attend to him. I know every argument he makes.
