Ernest C. Love vs A. T. Jones (Seventh-Day Adventist)
June 15, 1911
Santa Ana, California

(By S. A. Phillips)

Bro. Ernest C. Love, editor of Pacific Tidings and A. T. Jones, President of Battle Creek College, a noted Sabbath keeper began a debate at Santa Ana, Calif. on May 1st that lasted 21 days.

It grew out of a challenge to the 20 churches here last fall, when the Seventh-Day Adventist held a big tent meeting. Their preacher agreed to meet bro. Love, who accepted their challenge, but was not permitted to do so by "those in authority," seeing they could not use the almanac to show which day was the Sabbath. The Seventh-Day Baptist, with the "Church of God," who differ from Adventists but little, except as to the "divine utterances of Mrs. Ellen G. White," then took up the matter.

In this genial climate, the whole Seventh-Day tribe is very active and aggressive, therefore, bro. Love stipulated for a repetition of the discussion in six other places of his own selection in this state. This will give people a good chance to hear the truth.

We have read debates and their literature on the questions involved, heard their speakers for the past 30 years, and in truth and candor, without any attempt at Goliath-making, we deem Mr. Jones the strongest and mots able that we have read after or heard. Six feet in stature, ripe in experience, scholarly in attainments, with a powerful intellect and a very fine style of delivery; he is the author of ten books, and an extensive lecturer and debater; so where A. T. Jones fails, other will not succeed, though they have the strength of a giant and the endurance of an angel. Jesus said, "If a man fall on this stone, he shall be broken." As to bro. Love, he is a college graduate , large and powerful in body and brain, in the prime of life, accustomed to debates, and knows the "Old Book" having taken classes through it many times.

The discussion was free from everything objectionable. It was conducted in a Christian manner. The issues were: 1) The kingdom established on the day of Pentecost.
2) The perpetuity of he ten commandments.
3) The first day of the week as the day of Christian worship.
4) The perpetuity of the Sabbath.
5) Sunday keeping in the mark of the beast.
6) The immortality of the soul. Bro. Love affirmed nights 1-3-5, Jones affirmed nights 2-4-6. Pasadena is hearing them and Long Beach is the next.
