Ernest C. Love vs W. H. Madison (Socialist)
February 26, 1914
Winfield, Kansas

(By E. C. Love)

Our debate with the socialist in Winfield, Kan. had a strange ending. There was so much talk of violence over the Socialist's flying their red flag that the mangers of the opera house refused to let us have it for the last two nights of the debate (Jan.19,20) so we had to go to the Socialist's Hall. which held 500. About 1,000 were turned away. On the last night the socialists locked the door and wanted to charge 10 cents admission. This was a "skin game" to squeeze $50 for the socialism. We refused to go in. Some wooden boxes were brought for me to stand on. I spoke for 1 hour on the street. The socialist paid their dime and went in . Others did not follow.

I called on the audience to know if the debate had pulled any from socialism. About 12 held up their hands. The socialist debater is W. H. Madison, a former Baptist preacher. He said he quit preaching to go into a greater work. He thinks he is an able man and boast's that he has debated Clark Braden, Bishop Potter, Senator Rhea and many others. His own word and actions hurt his cause. But socialism seems to make a man say mean things about the government and the church.

Bro. W. W Otey lives near Winfield and is preaching on Sundays. He is in the thoroughbred hog business. He has Duracs. His hogs took first and second places at the Kansas State Fair. Bro. Otey was my moderator in the debate and a very good one. I never realized before that a good moderator can add so much to a debate.
