J. P. Lowery vs John R. Clark (Missionary Baptist)
November 18, 1920
Paragould, Arkansas

(By James E. Laird)

Debate held at Paragould, Ark. Oct. 19-22. General church propositions.

Clark is not a strong debater. He spends most of this time abusing his opponent, mud slinging and misrepresentations. I was told that some of his own brethren from Cardwell, Mo., who attended the debate were not satisfied with his defense of their doctrine, and said they would have another man to meet bro. Lowery.

Bro. Lowery did his work well in defending the truth, and did it in a Christian spirit. Some brethren think there is nothing to be gained by meeting such a man as Clark. I think that depends on the kind of man you send against him. If Clark is met by a Christian gentleman, as bro. Lowery is, it will exalt he cause of Christ and the better element of the Baptists will become disgusted, as they did on this occasion. The debate did good. A few nights after the debate 3 Baptists took their stand with the cause of Christ."
