L. S. Maynard vs. Homer H. Hawes (Time to Observe Lord's Supper and Trine Immersion)
August 18, 1949
Owosso, Michigan

(By Hugo Allmond)

The heretical teachings of Homer H. Hawes were exposed by L. S. Maynard at Owosso, Michigan, June 20-21.

Bro. Maynard affirmed that the Lord's Supper may be properly observed during "daylight hours of the first day of the week." it was shown that the early disciples met on the first day of the week to 'break bread.' (Acts 20:7) God approved 'the first day of the week' and did not say that only part of the day is acceptable to him. Bro. Hawes had to prove that the Lord's Supper must be observed at some particular time of the day. This he attempted to do, declaring that Saturday night, as we count time, is the acceptable time.

Bro. Hawes attempted to prove his contention, first, by its being a 'supper'. Bro. Maynard showed the various terms used by inspiration in referring to this institution and the significance of each, concluding that it is styled the 'Lord's Supper' because it is the Lord's; called supper because it was instituted at night. Secondly, Bro. Hawes attempted to his contention by Jewish count of time, insisting that sunset is the beginning of the day as recognized by the Lord. He made a great play on McGarvey's comment on Acts 20:11. Bro. Maynard declared that we do not mind meeting Bro. McGarvey and Bro. Hawes both when they are wrong. It was clearly shown that Acts 20:11 cannot refer to the Lord's Supper as "he" refers to Paul, not to the disciples mentioned in verse 7. The time of Paul's departure further shows clearly that this midnight followed the daylight hours. Bro. Maynard also used John 20:1, 19 to show that God recognizes days of night following the daylight hours. Bro. Hawes made no attempt to answer the argument based on this passage.

Tuesday night, June 21, Hawes affirmed that scriptural baptism requires a three-fold dipping in water. He claimed that the Greek word 'baptidzo' means 'to dip repeatedly' and three dips were necessary - one each 'into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.' Bro. Maynard showed that Thayer, one of Hawes' witnesses, never gave 'to dip repeatedly' as the New Testament meaning of baptidzo. Thayer says that in the New Testament it means 'an immersion in water.' "Further, some 18 - 20 translations of the New Testament were examined, and not one of them translates Matt. 28:19 in such a way as to encourage Bro. Hawes in his contention."

As to the necessity of one dip for each member of the godhead, triune immersion was reduced to an absurdity. Preaching is done in the name 'of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,' yet only one message is preached. Jesus declared. 'I and my Father are one,' and that Jesus was in the Father and the Father in him. Triune immersion permits the foolish assumption that one may be in covenant relationship with the Father and not with the Son or the Holy Spirit! Matt. 8:11 and Acts 13:3 were also used to show further the absurdity of Bro. Hawes' position on triune immersion.

The debate was well attended - until 15 months ago Hawes was connected with the Churches of Christ, and was considered a sound and faithful gospel preacher. He could be yet if he surrendered his heresies.
