W. E. Morgan vs A. H. Autrey (Missionary Baptist)
January 16, 1913
Bryson, Texas

(By C. Arthur Norred)

At Bryson, Tx. for 5 days.

Mr. Autrey affirmed that his church was scriptural in origin, doctrine and practice. He adduced the usual arguments.

On 3rd day in his first and second speeches bro. Morgan proved the church started at Jerusalem. Mr. Autrey labored hard to answer, but in his 2nd speech he introduced his "negative-affirmative" and tried to show bro. Morgan's church began in the days the Campbells. Bro. Morgan objected in that this would be making history the standard of proof, whereas according to the proposition, the standard was to be the word of God. Mr. Autrey said if an organization were found outside the Bible, it would be necessary to go outside the Bible to expose it.; and if it were unscriptural, you could not expose it in the Bible. Bro. Morgan informed that if he would sign a statement to the effect that the church known as the "church of Christ" could not be condemned by the scriptures, history might be introduced. Bro. Morgan then desired to let the audience vote as to the introduction of history. The Baptists objected to this.

After about 4 hours had been consumed in this way, bro. Morgan informed Mr. Autrey that if he were willing to admit his defeat by refusing to abide by a proposition which he had signed and by bringing into the discussion something which the rules of honorable controversy forbade, they could proceed. Mr. Autrey disagreed.
Bro. Morgan then gave one of the best discussions of the law of introduction into the kingdom that I ever heard. Brethren present: M. D. Ussery, A. D. Dies, T. B. Clark, J. F. Pursley, G. J. P. Masser.
