C. R. Nichol vs F. L. Dupont (Missionary Baptist)
January 9, 1902
Bardwell, Texas

(By J. B. Nelson)

At Bardwell, Tx. Nov. 4-10. General church proposition.

Dupont is one of the ablest Baptist preachers in Texas. He has met several of our ablest men including Joe Warlick 5 times. Dupont misquoted history and his argument on Baptist succession was completely overthrown on the first day. He got "ratted" and never did recover during the debate. He agreed to accept Thayer's Lexicon as authority on N.T. Greek but denied Thayer when he came to the design of baptism.

Bro. Nichol completely overthrew all of Mr. Dupont's arguments. Dupont denied Mk.16:9-20, saying it was no part of the inspired word of God. Nichol challenged him to debate that point. Dupont refused, saying it was no part of the inspired word. He denied other passages in the same manner. Bro. Nichol defended the truth as well as any man I ever heard in debate. He is only 28 yrs. old, but an able debater and has had 60 debates. He is loyal to God's word always contending for a "thus saith the Lord."

The Baptist felt their defeat so keenly that they said they wanted J.N. Hall to meet bro. Nichol or Joe S. Warlick. All I have to say is that I do not believe J. N. Hall is anxious to meet either of them, for he has been tried, so I am reliably informed. If Mr. Hall wants a debate, all he has to do is come to Texas. Either Warlick or Nichol will attend to his case. Bro.

Bro. Nichol was reared in Rutherford Co. Tenn. and attended the Nashville Bible School. (Readyville, Tenn. is his place of birth.)
