C. R. Nichol vs I. P. Whitaker (Russellite - Jehovah's Witness)
January 21, 1915
Childress, Texas

(By Tice Elkins)

Debate at Childress, Tx. I.P. Whitaker (Russellite) and Charlie Nichol. Four propositions discussed. Whitaker was weak and a disappointment to those expecting better things.

Bro. Nichol pressed him. Are infants saved?" and forced him to say, "No." "Was the man Jesus raised from the dead?" and Whitaker said, "No." Nichol pressed this question on the moderator and got the same, "No." Bro. Nichol pressed him on the subject of present European war, in view of their promise of 1,000 years peace to begin in October, 1914 and he would not talk about it.

On the first night of the debate bro. Nichol proposed they debate the "nature or mortality of man" and the question of "future punishment" in the same session. If Whitaker could establish that a man was wholly mortal and annihilated at death, as he claimed, there would be no sense in debating on his future punishment. Whitaker and moderator refused.

So the next night bro. Nichol offered an apology to the people for debating so foolish a thing, and reminded them that he tried to get Whitaker to change it, but they denied hearing it before. When bro. Nichol forced Mr. Whitaker to admit it, the crowd simply sneered, all but 6 - 8 Russellites. Bro. Nichol did a work that never will be excelled by any man.
