Interesting from start to finish as both sides were well represented. All who know bro. Nichol know him to be one of our strongest debaters. Mr. Penick was one of the strongest Baptists.
Both men conducted themselves as gentlemen. Mr. Penick's weakness was manifest in his failure, in most cases, to examine proof texts submitted. For the first two days he held up better that expected. His arguments were stronger. On the 3rd day he started to lose his footing and weakened to the end. On the 4th day he affirmed the direct touch of the H.S. He did not even define his proposition. Early in his affirmative he branched off from the operation of the H.S. and argued the doctrine of total depravity. Then both men argued that point for several sessions. Mr. Penick was pressed to tell whether his body or spirit sinned. Also pressed to tell where the spirit of a child came from. He would not say. To make a long story short, it was a great victory for the truth.
