C. R. Nichol vs Mr. Smith (Missionary Baptist)
February 2, 1922
Near Gainesville, Texas

(By C. R. Nichol)

Mr. Smith is a member of the M. B. Church and has an ambition to be a debater- to be able to defend the faith of which he is an exponent. Granting his claim to conscientiousness, his desire to be able to successfully present his doctrine and logically as well as scripturally meet all objections as well as expose false doctrine, is laudable. From my viewpoint, Mr. Smith does not possess the necessary qualifications by nature or by acquisition to make what is termed a successful man in the field of polemics.

The debate was near Gainsville, Tx., Jan.3-6, 1922. I am certain there is great and good derived from all discussions when they are properly conducted. I have never known a debate, where the preacher of the gospel conducted himself properly, that there has not been a congregation established following the debate, if there was not one at the time of the discussion. Some of our ministers decry discussions and strive to make their sermons never to oppose false doctrines. When one of the denominations hears me through a series of sermons, if I do not make him feel uncomfortable in his human religious affiliation, I am ready to review my sermons or question my ability to successfully present the truth.
