C. R. Nichol
A Discussion Of the Primitive Baptist Church
May 24, 1928

The Primitive Baptists, sometimes called "Hardshell Baptist," were rather numerous in the South a century ago. But they have decreased in numbers due to their unscripturalness and unreasonableness of teaching and practice. When a body of people cease to be aggressive and constructive they soon die. They failed to do mission work. They planted themselves on the doctrine that all men are by nature totally depraved, sinners dead in sin, could not hear the gospel, so it was foolish to preach to them. Some of their members could not reconcile the great commission with that view, and agitation spread and a large number separated themselves in 1832 into a body called "Missionary Baptist." At that times the new body (M. B.) did not reject the Philadelphia Confession of Faith which had been adopted by the Primitive Baptists. Today when a Miss. Bap. Attempts to trace a succession of Baptist churches he traces his line through churches which accepted this confession which is now rejected by the Miss. Baptist churches.

The Primitive Baptist split into many warring groups. Now they are not strong in numbers. Their style of preaching was different from other preachers. In many instances they would declare that they did not know what they would preach. The said the very selection of words was left to the Holy Spirit. In their work as a church they had nothing for the children, their children could not hear and obey. In many instances their children went to other churches and became members. Most of their children were lost to them.

With them, like the Miss. Bap., repentance goes before faith. A Primitive Bap. paper, the Banner Herald, said: "Repentance consists in a true mourning for sin and an earnest desire of deliverance from it. It is the fruit and consequence of living faith, and flows from love for God and his holy law. It is the daily exercise of the true Christian, and produces a total change of heart and life." Just how "repentance precedes faith" and at the same time is the "fruit and consequence of living faith" is a mystery to me. Is it strange that the Primitive Bap. church is dying?
