Gus Nichols vs Glen V. Tingley (Baptist)
July 17, 1941
Flat Creek, Alabama

(By W. A. Black)

Gus Nichols vs Glen Tingley for 6 nights at Flat Creek, Ala. Sixteen preachers attended. None of Tingley's preachers came.

Subjects: Direct operation of H. S. -- baptism and faith only.

Some very interesting things happened . Tingley gave Cornelius as an example of the H.S. operating directly upon the alien sinner to convert him. Then when they came to baptism, Tingley took the position that Cornelius was a saved man when the Spirit fell on him. Of course, bro. Nichols exposed him on this and on every argument he tried to make. Mr. Tingley was so hard pressed that he claimed that the Spirit operated dogs and mules.

Many times Tingley would make bold assertions that the Bible said thus and so, when the Bible did not say it. Here is an example: "Paul prayed for a direct operation of the Spirit on alien sinners." Bro. Nichols challenged him to read it out of the Bible and he would acknowledge defeat and quit the debate. -- The debate continued. I have attended several debates and I think bro. Nichols did the best job in exposing error and upholding the truth that I have ever heard. Howard Horton asked him to repeat at Bessemer.
